WHAT IS FUTSAL?
Futsal is FIFA's official indoor soccer game which is, essentially, a scaled down version of outdoor soccer played indoors. It is a small sided game (5v5) played on a smaller field (roughly basketball court sized) with a smaller (size 3-4) ball. Futsal is played with touchline boundaries.

There are no walls in play. This is the game that outdoor soccer players around the globe play when they are indoors to refine and maintain their control skills and touch. It is superior to walled soccer in terms of developing better skills and technique. In traditional American walled soccer, players regularly  whack the ball (and sometimes their bodies) against the boards which promotes improper technique and too often rewards errant play. In Futsal, players are constantly reminded to play the same quality control game that is required for success in the outdoor game.

Futsal is the only "Official form of Indoor Soccer" as approved by the Fédération Internationale de Football Association FIFA. It is played in all the continents of the world by over 100 countries with 12 million players. Futsal is normally played on a gymnasium floor, although it can be played on a variety of surfaces. The game does not require the use of expensive dasher boards, as do other versions of indoor soccer, therefore making it a very economical and safe sport.

Because the sport is a great skill developer, demanding quick reflexes, fast thinking, pin-point passing, and a four-second limit on all play restarts it is an exciting game for children as well as adults.

Great soccer superstars such as Pele, Zico, Robinho, Ronaldinho and Socrates grew up playing the game and credit Futsal with developing their skills. Futsal is played with a special low bounce ball, necessitating players to use their ball striking skills, rather than the ball's bounce, to propel it.

Girls U16

Congratulations to the South Jersey U16 Girls team success in their debut tournaments, taking second place in the Gold Division of the Spirit Kickoff Classic in Downingtown and first in the Pittsgrove Labor Day Tournament. At Spirit, the girls played their first game together and came up short 0-1 to the Philadelphia SC Coppa Pride, who went on to win the Division. Having gotten the first game jitters out of their system, the girls went on a winning streak for the weekend, taking second place. Labor Day in Pittsgrove brought a tough battle for the championship against the Millville Diamonds. The Diamonds came out playing very physically, but our girls were not intimidated and gave as much as they got, coming away with a 2-1 victory and the Championship trophy. The Kirkwood Girls Premier Columbus Day Frederick Cup 2008 is next.

Vipers reach Semi-Finals of Spirit United Tournament

SJE Elite

The Vipers traveled to Downingtown this weekend to compete in the Spirit United Tournament, one of the top girls tournaments in Pennsylvania. Playing in the Elite division, the first game against Montgomery United resulted in a 2-0 win for the Vipers. The second game on Saturday was against the Berks Rage from Reading, Pa. Once again, stellar defense limited chances for the Rage and the Vipers applied excellent offensive pressure in a 4-0 win. These two wins allowed the Vipers to win their bracket and advance to a Sunday morning semi-final game against SuperNova 98 of central PA, also a bracket winner. After 60 minutes of regulation play and two 5-minute overtimes, neither team could score and, with the game tied 0-0, went to penalty kicks to decide who moved on to the finals. SuperNova outscored the Vipers 4-3 in PKs to move into the final game. Please visit the Vipers team page
